Instructions for Authors

General guidelines

1. 1. Journal of the Geological Society of Korea publishes research articles, short notes, technical reports, and reviews in all fields of the geoscience. The journal also publishes those articles beyond the above scope through the consultation of the editorial board.
2. 2. Submission of Papers
   • ㆍAll manuscripts are encouraged to be submitted electronically via the website (http://www.gskorea.or.kr) or the e-mail correspondence (edits@gskorea.or.kr). In the case of submission through regular mail, one original copy and two additional copies (total three) are required to be delivered to the address below.

3. 3. Galley proofs of an accepted article will be sent to the corresponding author for further correction, and must be returned within one week after receipt. There can be an extra charge for major modification of the text, tables, or figures.
4. 4. Fifty offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered through the e-mail or in writing using the order form sent to the corresponding author. Authors are requested to pay an extra-charge for the additional offprints.
5. 5. For the protection of the copyrighted material for the society and authors, all authors must agree to the transfer of copyright when the manuscript is accepted for publication. Copyright for the published papers belongs to the society.
6. 6. Authors are requested to pay page charge of 30,000 KRW for each page less than ten, but authors, not supported by research fund, to pay 15,000 KRW perpage. For each page over ten, a charge of 40,000 KRW per page will be assessed. Color page will be charged with actual expenses.
7. 7. Once accepted, the manuscript should not be reproduced in part or as a whole without permission from the Editor-in-Chief. Published articles cannot be reproduced for commercial purpose without permission of the Journal of the Geological Society of Korea. For policies on research and publication ethics not stated in this guideline, see the "Guidelines on Good Publication" (http://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines) and the ICMJE Guidelines (http://www.icmje.org) and the GSK Guidelines. If any misconduct is suspected in a published article, we follow the COPE procedures for post-publication discussions and corrections.
8. 8. All manuscripts are reviewed confidentially by members of the editorial board and qualified reviewers. The manuscript number should be referred to in any subsequent communications between the corresponding author and the editor or the Editorial Office. The reviewers operate under the Guidelines for Reviewers and are expected to complete their reviews as soon as possible. The corresponding author is generally notified of the reviewers’ decision to accept, reject, or require modification or revision from the editor or the Editorial Office within 4 weeks after submission. The authors should submit the Authors’ Checklist and Response to the editor along with the modified or revised manuscript. Manuscripts that have been rejected or withdrawn may be resubmitted if the major criticisms have been properly addressed.

Preparation of Manuscript

1. 1. All manuscripts must be prepared in Korean or English, but exceptions canbe made by the editorial board if considered to be necessary.
2. 2. Manuscript should be typed in double-spaced format on A4-size paper, with 3.0 cm margins on the right and left and 3.5 cm on the top and bottom.
3. 3. The standard order of a manuscript is as follows: title page, Korean abstract, English abstract, text, acknowledgements, references, appendices, tables, figure captions, and figures.
4. 4. A title page should contain the title of the paper, the name (s) of the author (s), their position, institutional address (es), and e-mail address (es). Type of manuscript (articles, short notes, technical reports, reviews, and etc.) must be indicated at the bottom of the page. First author, corresponding author, and all the essential information of authors (address, telephone, e-mail) should be included in the page.
5. 5. Both Korean and English abstracts should be provided in a manuscript with up to five key words at the bottom of both Korean and English abstracts. The Korean abstract should be shorter than 600 characters, the English abstract should be shorter than 300 words.
6. 6. The title should be short and concise.
7. 7. The manuscript should be prepared in Korean and English. Exceptions include geographic names, people’s names, and scientific names of plants and animals.
8. 8. Korean expressions of foreign terms should follow the rules provided by the Ministry of Education.
9. 9. The quantity should be expressed in Arabic numbers.
10. 10. Longitudes and latitudes should be given for the locations of measurements, rock specimens, specimens for chemical analysis, and fossil specimens.
11. 11. SI units (m, kg, s) should be used to describe quantities. Insert space between Arabic numbers and SI units.
12. 12. All references, figures, plates, and tables should be refered to in the main text.

References

1. 1. All publications cited in the main text, tables, and figures should be presented in a list of references. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by the authors' surnames.
2. 2. References in the text should be arranged chronologically (e.g., Kim and Lee, 1965; Cheong, 1971; Park et al., 2002).
3. 3. To cite references, refer to all the surnames of the authors when there are less than two authors. For three or more authors, refer to the first author only (e.g., Bowen et al., 1976; Goven and Wilkinson, 1985). Cited publications that are authored by different workers with identical surnames should be distinguished by adding their initials (e.g., Kim, O.J. et al., 1973; Kim, B.K. et al., 1975).
4. 4. Add a lower-case character at the end of the year to distinguish the references that have identical authors and publication years (e.g., Cheong, C.H., 1972a).
5. 5. The names of journals should be written in full names instead of abbreviation.
6. 6. For non-English literature, the language and whether an Instructions to authors English abstract is included should be indicated at the end of the reference.
7. 7. Follow the styles shown in the examples below.

Figures, plates and tables

1. 1. All figures and plates should be submitted in electronic files that can be readily printed (JPG files are recommended).Printed sizes of all figures and plates should fit into A4-size paper. The following figures will be returned to the authors:
   1. A: Figures that contain too small or too large characters to be adequately reduced for printing.
   2. B: Figures that used too faint lines and patterns.
2. 2. Figures and tables should be numbered with Arabic numbers and in the order of appearance in the main text.
3. 3. All figure captions should be prepared in English and in the order of figure numbers.
4. 4. All tables should be prepared in English. The title of the table should be prepared in a single line and appear at the top of the table. The top and bottom of the table should be indicated by single lines. Tables should be concise and precise. The spacing between individual rows shouldn’t exceed 2-3 lines. Individual tables shouldn’t exceed 1 printed page.
5. 5. All figures, plates, and tables should be understandable bythe readers without consulting the main text.

Manuscript checklist

Please check each of the following items prior to submission of a manuscript.

• □ The manuscript was prepared using the Hangul or Microsoft Word.
• □ Telephone and E-mail address of the corresponding author
• □ Appropriate title, abstract, Keywords
• □ All tables (including title, description, footnotes) and figures (separated from figure legends) are provided in a single file with main text for initial submission.
• □ References were listed alphabetically by the names of the first author.
• □ All references mentioned in the Reference list are cited in the text and vice versa.

Copyright transfer agreement

For the protection of the Society’s ownership and the original author’s from misappropriations of their published work, the author agrees to a copyright transfer when the manuscript is accepted for publication
