Abstract

Structural geology is a fundamental field of geoscience that interprets deformation structures preserved in rocks and strata to understand tectonic processes, resource formation, earthquake generation, and geological hazards. This commentary reviews the development of structural geology in Korea with a particular focus on fault research and examines how advances in the concepts and methodologies of fault and fault-zone studies have expanded into resource exploration, fluid flow, active fault, and seismic hazard research. Since the 1970s, structural geology in Korea has developed from field-based geological surveys and descriptive structural analyses into a quantitative and multidisciplinary research field through integration with microstructural analysis, paleostress reconstruction, geophysical survey, remote sensing, and geochronology. In particular, faults are now understood not as simple discontinuities but as complex three-dimensional geological structures comprising fault cores, damage zones, segments, and linkage zones. This perspective has provided a basis for extensive research on fault evolution, fracture networks and fluid flow, and coseismic fault rupture. Active fault research in Korea was initially stimulated by geological safety assessments of critical infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, and has expanded substantially since the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake through national-scale active fault investigation and mapping projects. However, in a slow-deforming region such as the Korean Peninsula, recurrence intervals of moderate-to-large earthquakes are long and paleoseismic records are often incompletely preserved, requiring multidisciplinary and convergent approaches to constrain the locations, segmentation, slip rates, and three-dimensional geometries of active faults. Future research should further improve the quantitative understanding of fault three-dimensional structure and evolution, segmentation, and displacement characteristics, and integrate these results into reliable fault-source models and seismic hazard assessments that incorporate surface rupture.

(Ramsay, 1967; Ramsay and Huber, 1983, 1987).

특히 A.J. Reedman과 C.J.N.

Fig. 2.

(Adams and Sines, 1978; Segall and Pollard, 1983; Scholz, 1990; Martel and Boger, 1998; Kim et al., 2003).

Fig. 3.

(d) Idealized 3D strike-slip fault model illustrating variations in damage-zone architecture with fault position, including Mode-II structures perpendicular to fault displacement and Mode-III structures parallel to fault displacement.

Fig. 4.

Fault evolution model showing the linkage of two adjacent fault segments (Kim and Sanderson, 2005). The maximum displacement-fault length relationship changes with fault connectivity, and fault length increases rapidly during segment linkage.

Fig. 5.

(Liu et al., 2023; Zhang et al., 2023).

Fig. 9.

Fig. 11.

(a) Distribution of active faults mapped in southeastern Korea (modified from Kee et al., 2007). Geologic evidence of paleo-earthquake surface rupture has been reported predominantly along the Yangsan Fault and Ulsan Fault. The focal mechanisms indicate the 2016 Gyeongju and 2017 Pohang earthquakes. (b) Evidence of surface rupture associated with a large prehistoric earthquake along the Yangsan Fault, identified through a large-scale trench excavation at the Inbo site in the southern Yangsan Fault (Cheon et al., 2020).

(Han et al., 2020; Park et al., 2020).

(Lee and Jin, 1991; Kim and Choi, 2024).

Classification and 3D model of fault damage zones (Kim et al., 2003, 2004). (a) Fault tip damage zone, (b) fault linkage damage zone, and (c) fault wall damage zone. (d) Idealized 3D strike-slip fault model illustrating variations in damage-zone architecture with fault position, including Mode-II structures perpendicular to fault displacement and Mode-III structures parallel to fault displacement.

Examples illustrating the relationship between faults and fluid flow. (a) Stalactites developed along faults on the ceiling of Huanglong Cave, China (Kim and Sanderson, 2010). Larger stalactites are concentrated in extensional linkage zones, suggesting preferential fluid flow along these fault zones. (b) Dikes intruded along fractures in a horizontal outcrop at Sinseondae, Geoje Island, Korea (Yang and Kim, 2022).

Fig.
